privacy policy

This policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use Remi.

Remi uses Mixpanel for product analytics to help us understand feature usage and improve the app. We do not use third-party advertising SDKs, and we do not sell your personal information.

1. Introduction

Remi ("we," "our," or "us") is a social cooking log operated by Kevin Shim. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect personal information when you use Remi, including the mobile app, the website at remi.social, and related services.

2. Information We Collect

We collect information you provide directly, information created through your use of the service, and limited information from optional device permissions.

  • Account and authentication information: your phone number and/or email address, depending on the sign-in method you use, along with verification data needed to authenticate your account.
  • Profile information: username, display name, avatar, bio, timezone, privacy settings, and onboarding preferences you choose to provide.
  • User content: photos, captions, notes, recipes, ratings, comments, collections, bookmarks, collaborator selections, and other content you create or upload in Remi.
  • Social graph information: follow relationships, follow requests, blocked-user relationships, and visibility settings used to power private and public sharing.
  • Contacts data, if you grant permission: phone numbers and email addresses from your device address book, which we normalize and securely send to our servers to find people you may know on Remi.
  • Notification data, if you grant permission: your push notification token and notification preference settings.
  • Product analytics data: app activity such as screen views, feature interactions, and error events, along with technical metadata our analytics provider receives from the app or device to process those events.
  • Customer support communications: information you send us when you contact us for help.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use personal information to operate, secure, and improve Remi.

  • To create and authenticate your account, including sending one-time verification codes by SMS or email.
  • To host, display, organize, and share the content you choose to post.
  • To apply your privacy settings, block settings, and social preferences.
  • To help you find people you know if you choose to use contact matching.
  • To send product notifications you enable, such as activity or account-related notifications.
  • To measure app usage, diagnose product issues, and improve features and reliability.
  • To respond to support requests, troubleshoot issues, and protect the security and integrity of the service.

4. AI Features

Remi includes optional AI-powered features that can generate recipe details or title-and-tag suggestions from a photo you choose. If you use these features, we may send the selected photo and related context you provide, such as a title, caption, notes, or tags, to Google Gemini for processing.

  • Use of AI features is optional. You can always enter recipe information manually.
  • We do not use your submitted photos or text to train our own AI models.
  • AI-generated output may be inaccurate, incomplete, or not suitable for allergies, dietary restrictions, or food safety decisions.

5. Third-Party Services

We use service providers to run Remi. These providers may process personal information on our behalf for the purposes described in this policy.

  • Supabase: hosting, authentication, database, storage, and serverless functions.
  • Twilio or our configured SMS delivery provider: delivery of one-time verification codes for phone-based authentication.
  • Google Gemini: processing selected content for optional AI recipe and metadata generation features.
  • Mixpanel: product analytics for app usage, feature interaction, and error reporting.

We do not sell or rent your personal information, and we do not use third-party advertising SDKs in the app at this time.

We use analytics to understand how Remi is used and to improve the service. We do not describe our analytics usage as tracking you across apps or websites owned by other companies for advertising purposes.

6. Notifications

If you allow notifications, we store a push token and your notification preferences so we can deliver alerts related to activity on Remi. You can disable notifications in your device settings or, where available, within the app.

7. Contacts Matching

If you grant access to your contacts, Remi reads phone numbers and email addresses from your address book and sends normalized values to our servers to match them against existing Remi accounts. This feature is optional and is used only to help you discover people you may know.

8. Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as your account remains active or as needed to operate the service, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. If you delete your account, we will delete or de-identify your personal information within a reasonable period, generally within 30 days unless we are required to keep certain data by law.

9. Your Rights and Choices

You may have the right to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you, subject to applicable law.

  • You can delete your account from within the app.
  • You can stop using optional permissions such as contacts or notifications by changing your device settings.
  • You can contact us to request access to or deletion of personal information we hold about you.

10. California Privacy Rights

If you are a California resident, you may have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act and California Privacy Rights Act, including the right to know, delete, and correct certain personal information, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights. Remi does not sell personal information or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

11. Children's Privacy

Remi is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete it.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date on this page and may provide additional notice where appropriate.
